Why “Positive Mindset” Isn’t Enough– The role of subconscious beliefs in shaping your reality

We’ve all heard it before, “change your thoughts, change your life”. This is only ½ the battle of your transformation. I used to believe that if I just thought positively, saw the bright side of things, and repeated positive affirmations, then my life would all just fall perfectly into place. Until it didn’t.
Here’s the thing: no matter how much I tried to believe in being powerful, joyful, and successful, the patterns and habits were still there. It’s like I couldn’t escape them.
I’d set a big goal for my business, but somehow would find myself distracted by everything that didn’t pertain to my business.
I’d attract amazing connections just to dismiss them.
I’d start to feel confident, until comparison would set in, and so would self-doubt.
Positive thinking left me feeling like this manifestation stuff didn’t work for me. Somehow I was different than everyone else. And eventually, I felt broken.
It wasn’t until after years of diving deep into self-discovery methods that I realized my subconscious was running the show and that my mindset alone wasn’t the key to the kingdom of bliss.
What I uncovered is that your mindset is only the very tip of the iceberg. Think about that for a minute. What can you not see in the iceberg? The deep workings of it that go way below the surface of what the visible eye can see. If you have ever seen a whole picture, it is deep and wide. That’s a perfect depiction of our subconscious mind. It’s dark. It’s hidden and cannot be seen with the naked eye unless you’re looking for it.
The Subconscious Runs The Show
The subconscious mind operates 95% of your daily thoughts, patterns, habits, beliefs, and triggers. Only 5% of what you think is conscious. So if it were a matter of “change your thoughts, change your life,” then why are we suffering so much despite coercing ourselves into positivity?
Our subconscious mind is the main force behind the life you’ve created so far. It is formed in early childhood, typically before the age of 7, when your brain is in a highly programmable state.
Did you grow up hearing adults say these types of things:
“Money doesn’t grow on trees”.
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.
“You have to hustle hard to be successful”.
Those phrases created deeply ingrained beliefs that now shape the way you live and believe what’s possible for you, without you even realizing it.
Mindset Vs. Subconscious Alignment
Mindset work can be powerful. But, only focusing on that and not doing the deeper inner work is like painting over a cracked wall. Unless you address the foundation, the cracks will show through.
When your conscious desires and subconscious mind align, you experience more flow, abundance, and ease in life.
Here’s what will begin to happen:
You take inspired action without forcing or controlling an outcome.
Your relationships become more harmonious and loving.
You stop sabotaging your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
You begin to live with energy and vitality.
When they are out of alignment, you will always feel like you’re taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back, living on the hamster wheel of life.
Why Positive Thinking Isn’t Enough
Let’s say you want to build a thriving and profitable soul-led business. Your conscious mind says, “Yes, let’s do this. I am so ready”. But the subconscious belief that’s hidden will tell you the truth. “If I am seen, I will be judged”, or even worse, “if I am seen or heard, I will die”. That belief is more common than you know.
Your subconscious is pulling out all the stops to keep you safe. It can do this in ways that your conscious mind isn’t aware of. For instance, pricing your offers too low. Or even “forgetting” to do something because you're procrastinating.
Exposing the Lies to Create a New Truth
At some point today or tonight, try this belief excavation exercise:
Grab a paper and pen. At the top, write “If my goal were 100% possible, what am I afraid of?”
Set a timer for 5 minutes and free write whatever comes to you. You can ask your Higher Self to step in for assistance. Don’t censor this and try to make it pretty or presentable. No one is seeing this but you. Get honest with yourself and remember your brain is a filthy liar and can deceive you into writing things that “feel-good”. This isn’t a “feel-good” exercise.
When we excavate, we are digging up the dirt. Make it messy. Because, ultimately, deep in the subconscious mind is where the gold is hidden.
You can then begin to shift the belief by questioning its validity. Ask yourself, is this true right now? Am I overreacting? What evidence do I have that this is a fact? Journaling and writing it out are my favorite ways to rewire the subconscious mind.
