How to Communicate With Your Spirit Guides
The subtle signs that you've been missing and how to spot them.
It was December 8, 1977. I was born not needed, unwanted, and a not-so-happy accident to two young parents who were living in their own trauma response. Even at conception, I was already imprinted with the trauma of being abandoned and unloved.
Experiencing early onset trauma is not something I brag about and isn’t something I let define me. In fact, for 38 years, I hid behind the truth of my childhood experiences. I didn’t want to talk about it, think about it, and even got angry with my older sister when she would talk about stories from our torturous past.
My mother was a lost soul. I know very little about her, only what has been brought up in brief conversations and what my Spirit Guides have shown me. Janice was a young mom to three daughters. An alcoholic, pill popper who loved what my dad calls Reds. Barbiturates that are highly addictive and used as downers.
My mother lost her life in a self-inflicted fire that had ignited in the quadplex we lived in in South West Detroit. She fell asleep drunk with a cigarette in her hand. My two older sisters, three and two years old, and I, ten months old, were rescued by my grandfather, who lived in the apartment just below us.
It was October 30, 1978. Devil’s Night is what they called it back in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s in Detroit. It represented the shadow we ignore and the rage from abandonment that resulted in massive fires, theft, and intentional destruction. It’s not a coincidence that my mother’s shadow was exalted and my experience of abandonment was initiated on that Devil’s Night.
This particular night isn’t just about fiery destruction; it’s a representation of the thinning of the veil. Cultures throughout history believed that this was when spirits crossed over and when past loved ones were present. It also represents the unseen shadow that is waiting to be witnessed by the masses. Coincidence? No way! Synchrony and symbolism? Most definitely.
I learned at a very young age that the adults in my life were unreliable and unsafe. I was left in my father’s care, who was just as unstable and irresponsible as my mother. My grandfather attempted to watch over us, but he had his own addiction to alcohol.
My sisters and I were frequent visitors to the local bar just across the street from the very apartment where my mother had died. My grandfather’s drink of choice was whiskey on the rocks with a shot of water. We spent our mornings, afternoons, and evenings sitting on the bar, running around the jukebox, and rolling the pool table balls back and forth on the grimy floor of the dark and dingy bar where the local alcoholics gathered to drown away their pain.
For most people, guidance is sought from a parent, teacher, religious figure, or the government. They’re programmed to believe that what they need is outside of them in another person or authority system. Outsourcing their intuition to external sources. For me, my personal power was only within me. It had been proven time and time again in the presence of adults who were supposed to be responsible for me that I couldn’t rely on anyone but myself.
When I was a young toddler, I had imaginary friends that I would play with and talk to. I felt their presence as if they were there in real life with me. They had personalities and loving energy. They felt safe. Familiar. Like family who understood me and actually cared about me. In my little mind, it wasn’t safe to talk about them, so I kept them a secret.
My invisible friends weren’t something I made up to cope with the lack of safety I felt in the real world. They were my earliest experience of compassion, guidance, and support, before the world taught me that this was delusional and my sheer imagination. These were my Spirit Guides showing me unconditional love.
Fast forward 35 years, and when I began to meditate as an adult, I felt an eerily familiar feeling. The same sense of presence. Similar energy. The same quiet encouragement. The feeling of being safely held like a child.
That’s when it clicked—I wasn’t meeting my Guides for the first time. I was remembering them. In that first conscious moment of connection, a bright blue orb of light surrounded me, enveloping my entire presence, and what I felt wasn’t shock or surprise, but steadiness. Compassion. The kind of unconditional safety that felt like being held by a loving parent I never had.
I didn’t have to call on them or summon anything. They were simply there—present in my energy field, visible in my mind’s eye, many of them at once. They didn’t speak in loud, booming voices. Their language was soft and subtle, arriving through imagery, intuition, gentle electric signals moving through my body, and a sudden knowing that landed without effort or explanation.
They didn’t tell me what to do; they helped me remember who I was beneath the programmed belief that I wasn’t worthy or wanted.
Meditation became my bridge to my helping Spirits. It was my lifeline to my innocence. The space where my mind could soften just enough for my subconscious to feel that I belonged and that I was finally safe in the presence of benevolent beings.
The first meeting didn’t make my life instantly magical and mystical. But it changed the way I showed up. I stopped feeling alone in my healing journey. I stopped believing that I had to figure everything out on my own and that I was worthy of love and support, even if it wasn’t in the physical world. I began to collaborate with my intuition, my Spirit Team, my Higher Self, and the deeper, wiser intelligence available to me at any given time.
It’s been 13 years since I started a regular meditation practice, and I can confidently say it’s the one thing that has brought me closer to God. Not the man in the sky, but the unconditional love that is all things. When you experience that kind of loving force internally, you know that it’s always available to you because you know it’s never separate from you.
Our Guides and Guardians are here to protect us, lead us, and support us. Without conditions. They are always ready and willing to help. They will never override your free will. They honor you and your life decisions. They will also gently redirect you if you’re heading in a direction that is not aligned with your soul path.
Most people think connecting with their Guides requires some special psychic gift, years of practice, or a perfectly quiet mind. Your Guides don’t need you to be advanced. They need you to be available. Present. Willing. Open to receive.
Connection starts within the body, not the mind.
Before you try to strive for anything, slow your nervous system. Sit or lie somewhere you feel safe. Let your breath deepen naturally. No forcing. No performing. Just letting your body know it’s okay to soften. Safety is the doorway. Always.
Then bring your awareness inward.
Not searching.
Not straining.
Just noticing.
Our Guides communicate in subtle ways—through sensing, feeling, imagery, and sudden knowing. You might notice sensations in your body: a pulse, a vibration, a gentle pressure. Or you might not feel anything at all. You may simply sense that you’re no longer alone, that something steady is with you.
You might see a color or a symbol in your mind’s eye. Or the shift may be quieter than that—an unexpected calm, a groundedness, a softening you can’t quite explain. All of it matters.
Most Guides arrive like a whisper, not a shout. Quiet. Neutral. Loving without force.
You can simply ask for them to show themselves to you. Say something like “I’m calling forth the highest loving light and guidance that supports my highest good.” Or “ I am opening to connect with my Guides, Guardians, and Higher Self for loving support.”
That’s it. No perfect mantra or message. Intention matters more than your language.
Then be still and listen carefully with your intuition. Observe without analyzing. Trust in what you’re feeling and sensing. If thoughts come up, let them pass. If doubt shows up, notice it without judgment.
Remember, your subconscious will question what feels unfamiliar to the conscious mind. That doesn’t mean nothing is happening; it means that something new is taking place.
Just like anything else in life, the more you practice tuning in and trusting what comes through, the clearer the connection becomes. Not because your Guides get louder, but because you get quieter and more attuned to the energy of your Spirit Team. You become more receptive through repetition and build deeper trust in your own inner knowing and sensing.
When to Call on Your Spirit Guides
If you are anything like me, independence is your strong suit and a reliable survival strategy.
But there came a time when I no longer wanted to be
The strong one.
The dependable one.
The responsible one.
I desperately wanted to be supported and guided, not by an expert, a mentor, or another New York Times best-selling self-help author, but by a worthy source that was a part of me. This is why my unbreakable bond with my Guides has been my lifeline and my sanity keeper.
The relationship can be anything you make of it.
Not so you can escape reality.
Not to hand over your power.
Not to outsource your intelligence.
But to remember that you don’t have to do it all on your own.
When you know your guides and build a safety net as a relationship with them, it creates a felt sense of support that calms your nervous system and lets the monkey mind relax. When the body feels accompanied, it stops bracing for the worst-case scenario. This is how we heal through safety.
It’s no longer about fixing yourself, but about meeting yourself with kindness and compassion. And when you’ve been through complex childhood trauma, this is what is needed to live a life of peace and fulfillment.
Our Guides are not only trusted companions, but they also reflect back to us our Higher Selves. In fact, my main guide has become my Higher Self. I see her not only in my mind’s eye, but also with my physical eyes. She dances as tiny light orbs in the distance. She also shows up as thousands of whispies dancing in front of me. It’s pure magic when you can experience yourself in this way. It’s proof of our Divinity.
Spirit Guides, Spirit Team, Guardians, and your Higher Self help you see who you are beneath your fear, trauma, blind spots, and subconscious conditioning. In times of self-doubt, they bring clarity without confusion. Direction without pressure. Softness without striving.
And here’s something that most people don’t expect – working with your Guides helps you learn to trust in yourself. As you learn their language through intuition, sensations, and subtle knowing, you stop outsourcing your power and authority. You become more aligned in your decisions and actions. You become more aware of what’s a yes and what’s a no in your body. Life begins to move with more ease and flow and less force. Not because of perfection but because you’re listening to the subtleties in life.
You have an entire team of benevolent Spirits that you hand-picked before birth, each one aligned with your soul’s growth and healing. Some may be passed loved ones. Some may be Archangels, Ascended Masters, Saints, animals, Galactic Beings, or all of the above. They don’t interfere. They wait. Ready when you’re willing to listen.
I didn’t find my guides in a single mystical moment or a dramatic awakening. I met them the same way I met myself again – slowly, quietly, and willingly. Through sitting still when everything in me wanted to run. Through remembering the child who once spoke freely to unseen companions before the world taught her to doubt what she felt.
What meditation gave me wasn’t answers, it gave me connection.
A connection with guidance that never demanded, never judged, never rushed my healing. A relationship that met me exactly where I was—fractured, searching, human—and reminded me I was still whole beneath it all.
Your story may look different, but the opportunity is the same. Safety in the body. Curiosity instead of striving. Trust is built one quiet moment at a time. Whether your connection begins in meditation, in stillness, or in a subtle feeling you can’t quite explain, it all counts.
Living aligned with your Higher Self isn’t about reaching some spiritual destination. It’s about walking with awareness. With support. With compassion for the parts of you that forgot and the parts that always remembered.
So if you’re tired of grinding it out, guessing and guessing again, forcing an outcome, done with repeating behaviors, then maybe it’s time to connect with your Spirit Guides. They are always willing and ready to collaborate and support you.
The guidance you’re seeking? It’s already walking beside you, waiting for you to slow down enough to notice.
If you feel the pull to deepen this connection, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
An Akashic Records reading offers a safe, grounded space to meet your guides consciously—to understand who’s walking with you, how they communicate with you, and how to work with their support in a way that feels aligned and embodied. This isn’t about giving your power away. It’s about strengthening your relationship with your intuition, your Higher Self, and the loving support already surrounding you.

What an incredible story. Thank you for sharing. I definitely need to meditate more. It’s been a long time.
Thank you for your raw truth about childhood. That’s the thing about truth, it can’t be denied, it must be acknowledged and lived in.
“What meditation gave me wasn’t answers, it gave me connection.”
I couldn’t agree more.
The feeling of overall presence, the way the air is suddenly heavy with energy, yet so light - you feel as if you may float right out of your body. I went searching for answers, searching for a way to heal, and what I found, was my heart in the form of guides, who come whenever I quiet the noise and calm my nervous system, not because I call upon them, but because they’ve always been there waiting for me to hear.
